How I Traveled Southeast Asia (Thailand) for $10/Day – A Real Breakdown

Traveling Thailand on a student budget? Yes, it's possible — even from Kenya. I spent under $10 (about Ksh 1,300) a day and still got to explore beautiful temples, eat good food, and sleep well. Here’s how:

Breakdown:

  • πŸ›Œ Accommodation – $3–$5/night: Dorm beds in Chiang Mai & Bangkok via Hostelworld or Agoda. Clean, safe, and perfect for solo travelers.

  • 🍜 Food – $1–$2/meal: Ate from local markets and roadside stalls. Khao Pad (fried rice) or Pad Thai will fill you up for 50 baht or less. It is very safe.

  • πŸ›Ί Transport – Used GrabBike, public buses (8–20 baht per trip), and walked a lot. You could rent a motorcycle 200bht a day too

  • 🏯 Activities – Many temples are free or under 100 baht. I did a free walking tour and visited local markets.

Tips:

  • Fly AirAsia/Thai Lion from Nairobi (via connecting routes like Addis, Doha, or Dubai). *for new travellers. If you live here, like me,  the better!

  • Always book hostels near train/bus lines to cut costs.

  • Carry snacks from Kenya like biscuits, instant noodles, or cereal bars for budget days.

  • 7-11 convenience stores have cheap snacks, foods, cosmetics and anything you may need for travels.
